It's true, there are riots in Athens. Yes, we're spending the night in Cairo, which is still trying to figure out whether it's in a state of revolution or not. And we are indeed going to get a close, if still plane-ensconced view of Khartoum. Plus, we live in Juba. Sounds iffy. But then again, they're rioting in Vancouver, too. So off to Athens it is.
My office mate has a habit of saying, "God help Africa" at least once during any conversation about the fairly depressing subject of politics in Sudan or in his home of Zimbabwe. Neither Athens nor Vancouver has anywhere near the suffering currently going on in Abyei, Southern Kordofan, or any number of other places in this country. But still, his prayer can now be extended to Southern Europe and Western Canada. Which is as it should be. Goodness knows, we need it no matter where we find ourselves.
