John told me a funny story from the training his organization is facilitating this week for army chaplains that I thought needed to be blogged. The trainers were talking about cultural stereotypes and asked for perceptions of other countries. When they asked how people thought of the United States, one participant yelled out, "America is like heaven... except heaven is easier to get into!"
After everyone had a good laugh, one of the African facilitators who now lives in Dallas offered a rebuttal from his own experience. He said that he too thought the United States was heaven when he was growing up in a rural Rwandan village. After he moved to the US, he was thinking it was actually pretty close as he settled into his nice apartment. And then one day he saw a cockroach crawling across the floor. He was shocked and just stared at it for a moment before asking, "Mr. Roach, did you follow me here from Africa?" The roach looked up and responded, "Nope. I got here first!"
