Yesterday John and I heard from co-workers that fighting had broken out in Abyei and today our suspicions were confirmed in news reports like this one. Unfortunately this is no surprise, as the tensions in Abyei have been well documented and many people have predicted that conflict would likely break out between the nomadic Misseriya and the resident Dinka Ngok over grazing rights and the decision join either the North or the South, a decision which is out of their hands anyway. It's just disappointing that after every other well documented worry around the referendum did not come true to see this one happening. Of course our hope is that this is just some isolated fighting and peace will be restored quickly. Our prayers are with the people of Abyei today.
