Now that the region of Southern Sudan has officially become the Republic of South Sudan, an unfortunate thing has happened: the nickname “ROSS” has started to take off. Now, I love an acronym as much as the next aid worker. I mean, I work in an LDC for a USG-funded INGO doing G&C and CD for CBOs and CSOs working in PB and NRM. Sometimes we even dabble in OVC and GBV work... so… yeah, I get it. Saying full words is hard. But ROSS… really? I’m going to go out on a limb and say South Sudan is definitely a case of STDNAA.[i] But maybe that’s just me.
